HORSEBACK RIDING
Horses and guides are available that will pick you up at the front door and a number of dramatic trail rides are easily accessible through some of the nearby trails. One takes you to the top of a nearby mountain for a great view of the lake and sunset. You can take jungle trips on foot as well into the jungle rainforest areas. There are local guide services and trips can be from two hours to four or five days. Generally it cost $25 for a two hour trip and up to $130 per day with horses, equipment, food and English speaking guide for tours to remote areas. The guides explain local customs and all about the rainforest and the useful trees and plants, especially medicinal plants. SWIMMING Swimming in Lake Petén Itzá is great. The water around El Remate is clean, clear and never cold, staying around 22 C. It's best to jump in from a public dock, because there is no good, sandy beach to walk in to the water. The dock across from the Biotopo Cerro Cahui Reserve entrance is a popular swimming area, and paying the park entrance fee is not necessary. Kayaks and canoes are available for rent from locals. |
