El Remate look along the road Biotopo Cerro Cahui Park. There are
free bicycles at the hotel.
A two hour boat trip in the
evening takes you across the lake and up some of the small rivers of
Xpop or Ixlu for roosing sites and other birding areas. (Cost
$6.60) Good birdwatching guides who speak Englis cost from $40 to
$80 for a 4 to 6 hour trip. The park is 2 kms. from the village of El Remate along
the lake shore road. It has more than 10 Kms., of well kept hiking
trails. Visitors often see howler and spider monkeys, toucans and many
varieties of birds, large butterflies, etc.. Birdwatching is
common here. There are two high lookout points or "Miradores" where you
can get and excellent views of Lake Peten Itza and the near by
lakes of Macanche and Sal Itza. The swimming dock at the entrance of
the park is popular and very clear water swimming and a good picnic
area. You don't pay the entrance fee for swimming. The park
is controlled by CECON a branch of the Guatemala's University of San
Carlos and was established for scientific studies. There are 8 Biotopo
protected areas in Guatemala. Open 6:30 am until sunset. Cost
$2.50 entrance ticket. Come visit our bed and
