THE VILLAGE OF EL REMATE

WOOD CARVING ...EXPLORING IN CERRO CAHUI PARK...BOAT TOURS...BIRD WATCHING...JUNGLE WALKS...TOURS OF TIKAL RUINS...HORSEBACK RIDING...CANDLELIGHT DINING…SUNSET VIEWING & more

El Remate is a small, woodcarving village of 370 families located on the east end of Lake Peten Itza, 30km (20 minutes) from Flores, Peten, Guatemala. Located mid-way on the road from Flores to the Tikal ruins, it is now becoming a destination for tourists, especially those wanting to avoid the congestion and noise of Santa Elena and Flores. A good base for staying in the Peten area.

El Remate is also the nearest town with tourist accommodations to Tikal. Two of the Canopy Tours and Yaxha. Yaxha was the Maya site made famous as the base for filming of the hit CBS reality program Survivor Guatemala. Yaxha has become the second most visited Mayan Ruins in the area after Tikal National Park. See tours to Yaxha

El Remate is also close to a number of other important Mayan ruins in addition to Tikal and Yaxha, such as Ceibal, Nakun, Uaxactun and Motul. Also, within a half-hour are these activities: the Sky Way (swinging bridges, jungle canopy walks), Three Canopy Cable Rides (zip lines), Horseback Riding, Boat Tours, Birding, Petencito Zoo, & Actun-Can caves. There are a number of ecologically oriented hiking trails and other points of interest within easy walking distance or a 5 to 10 minute bus ride.

The numerous wood carving families in El Remate are now doing less slash and burn agriculture, preserving the precious, and in some cases scarce, natural hardwoods. You can see some of their largest carvings at Casa De Don David, as well as buy smaller versions in the local shops.

Swimming is safe in the clear water of Lake Peten Itza, but due to the white mud and rock beaches, swimming is best done from one of the many public docks.

Since all transportation in route to Tikal passes thru El Remate, it is easy to travel to/from Flores and Tikal by taxi or one of a multitude of microbuses which are in constant transit between the two locations. Tourist buses in route to Flores from Chetumal, Mexico & Belize also arrive and depart from El Remate twice daily. [See How to get there]

There are 19 or more places to stay in El Remate. Most are family operated and only a few have private baths or hot water. An acceptable room costs from $25 - $120 double, and camping is available from $3-$6 per person. When making reservations, be sure to ask and understand clearly what you are getting, since here, as in other areas of Latin America, a place called a hotel or bungalow may actually be an open thatch roofed hut with no windows or doors and make shift beds, or even a nice campsite with half-walls.

La Casa De Don David (www.lacasadedondavid.com) is a 15-room Bed & Breakfast with a full-service restaurant that operates 15 hours a day, 7 days a week.  Clean, spacious rooms have private baths with hot water showers. Most have air conditioning, porch with hammock and/or chairs, and can accommodate anywhere from 2 – 6 people.  They accept Visa, MasterCard, PayPal, travelers’ checks and US dollars, as well as local currency.

While there are no cable or phone lines to El Remate, Don David’s has cellular service (though not always reliable) and satellite Internet.  Tel 502-7928 8469 or 5306-2190, info@lacasadedondavid.com

While there are plans for a tourist information center to open in 2008, currently TOURIST INFORMATION and maps of Guatemala, Tikal, Antigua, Belize, Palenque, etc. are available in the restaurant and hotel lobby at La Casa de Don David.  The helpful, friendly staff can either make arrangements from the hotel or put you in touch with others for Spanish language school contacts, or give you directions on most any of the many activities in the area, including zip line Canopy rides, boat tours, birding, swimming, horseback riding, fishing, hiking, jungle walks, archeology, anthropology, ruins, Ruta Maya tours, wood carving, artifact hunting, tropical or medicinal plants, spiders, tarantulas, native fruits and vegetables, and just meeting new friends.

The following places are places to stay or eat within 2 kms of El Remate. The links are included for informational purposes only. La Casa De Don David does not charge for the links and does not necessarily recommend or endorse them.
